As most of you know, I do enjoy any chance I get to go
shopping with my daughter, Janell.
We were recently dress shopping for her and I was reminded of us
shopping last year for her homecoming dress. We were in the dressing room with a couple of beautiful
dresses and it would seem a simple task to zip them. There was one dress in particular that wasn’t tight on
Janell but the zipper had a bit of a crink in it which was making it very
difficult to zip. It didn’t help
that the dress did not have a hook and clasp at the top either so it was
difficult to get any traction.
Well, I was putting my heart and soul into this when I realized that my
hair was now in the zipper too. It
was quite a scene and a bit painful but the worst part was that I got to
laughing just thinking about it and I couldn’t stop. Well, there is nothing like your 16-year-old daughter
staring at you and asking how did that even happen. I explained to her that things like this are what make
events such as these memorable. She
shook her head and said, “only you.” Janell has been the witness to many of my
“memorable moments”…
As I am getting older, I am learning to just enjoy these events
that have something memorable to them.
Welcoming these moments seems to add some sprinkles to this ordinary
life of mine.
I am also convinced that I am not the “only one” with these
memorable memories that do seem to happen quite frequently.
I began to understand how much God loves us once I
experienced the love I have for my own children. And when I am thankful for them and these memorable ordinary
moments, I make a place for God to grow within me. Being present and not rushed in these ordinary adventures shows
God’s love to those He entrusted to me…even if hair in a zipper is what is
required to slow me down to enjoy the moment.
Romans 12:1 (Message) says, “So here’s what I want you to
do, God helping you. Take your
everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and
walking-around life – and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the
best thing you can do for him. “
